In the competitive landscape of Indian educational institutions, securing a position in the NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) rankings is a testament to academic prowess and institutional excellence. IIT BHU (Indian Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University) has consistently strived to carve its niche, albeit facing fluctuations in its rankings over the years.
Established in September 2015 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (now the Ministry of Education), NIRF initially focused on ranking universities, management, engineering, and pharmacy institutions. However, the scope expanded over the years to encompass various disciplines, including architecture, medical, and dental categories.
IIT BHU's journey through the NIRF rankings reflects a mix of achievements and challenges. In 2017, it secured the 70th and 31st positions in the overall and engineering categories, respectively. Subsequent years witnessed notable improvements, with the institution jumping to the 28th position overall and breaking into the top 20 in engineering by 2018. However, stagnation followed from 2018 to 2021, with a slight decline in engineering rankings in 2021.
NIRF evaluates institutions based on five parameters: teaching-learning resources, research and professional practices, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and perception. IIT BHU's performance across these parameters has been subject to scrutiny and improvement initiatives.
The fluctuating rankings in NIRF and QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) rankings underscore the nuanced evaluation criteria employed by each framework. Despite facing challenges, IIT BHU remains committed to enhancing its academic standards and research contributions. With concerted efforts from faculty, students, and administrative bodies, the institution aims to reclaim its position among the top-ranking institutions nationally and globally.
As the Dean of Research and Development, Professor Vikas Dubey, emphasizes, "We have made significant strides in various aspects at IIT BHU. The upcoming NIRF rankings are anticipated to reflect our commitment to excellence."

Through strategic planning and continuous improvement endeavors, IIT BHU endeavors to ascend the ranks and uphold its legacy of academic brilliance and innovation in the years to come.
