- Demand for a grace period of one and a half months to shift shops to alternate locations.

Varanasi, March 16, 2024: In light of the ongoing month of Ramadan, the Municipal Corporation has extended relief to meat shops in the vicinity of the Kashi Vishwanath Dham, allowing them to operate within a 2-kilometer radius. However, they must adhere to specific conditions, including the mandatory installation of green cover around their premises.

The Municipal Corporation, taking cues from the models implemented in Haridwar, Ayodhya, and Mathura, had earlier imposed a ban on meat shops within a 2-kilometer radius of the Kashi Vishwanath Dham. Consequently, on March 1 and March 2, a total of 42 meat shops in the Beniyabagh and New Road areas were ordered to close down.

As the closure of all meat shops continues in the Beniyabagh and New Road areas since March 2, coinciding with the commencement of Ramadan for the Muslim community, Councilor Amardev Yadav led a delegation to meet Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari at the Meat Traders Corporation office on Saturday.

During the meeting, it was highlighted that the ongoing month of Ramadan would culminate in the celebration of Eid in April. Given these circumstances, it was deemed challenging for meat shop owners to relocate their businesses immediately. Therefore, a request was made to Mayor Tiwari for a grace period of one and a half months to facilitate the smooth transition of shops to alternative locations.

Responding to the plea, Mayor Tiwari granted conditional permission to meat traders to operate their shops until Ramadan. However, the condition imposed requires them to ensure the presence of green cover around their shops.

This decision comes as a relief to meat traders, offering them a temporary solution while they work towards finding alternative locations for their businesses. As the month of Ramadan progresses, the Municipal Corporation remains committed to facilitating a smooth transition for all stakeholders involved.

Conclusion:
The decision by the Varanasi Municipal Corporation to grant conditional permission to meat shops within a 2-kilometer radius of the Kashi Vishwanath Dham until Ramadan demonstrates a balance between religious sentiments and administrative regulations. As the city continues to uphold its cultural and religious diversity, such measures ensure harmony and cooperation among all communities.
