Kashi, the ancient city of Varanasi, renowned for its spiritual significance and rich cultural heritage, is set to witness a remarkable transformation. The Omkaleshwar Khand area is undergoing a significant redevelopment project, focusing on the enhancement of eight historic ghats. This initiative aims to blend the timeless traditions of Kashi with modern amenities, offering an unparalleled experience to both locals and visitors.
The redevelopment project, funded by the Piramal Group's CSR initiative, will see an investment of approximately ₹25 crores. The project encompasses the revitalization of ghats from Panchagni to Ram Ghat, with a total length of 650 meters. The first phase focuses on the reconstruction of six ghats: Prahlad Ghat, Panchagni Ghat, Naya Ghat, Rani Ghat, Telia Ghat, and Shakka Ghat. The second phase will include Lal Ghat and Ram Ghat, with the entire project expected to be completed by the end of this year.
The revamped ghats will offer a unique blend of Kashi’s traditional elements and modern facilities. Key features include:
- Amphitheaters and Sports Facilities: Naya Ghat will feature a 6000 square feet amphitheater, while Telia Ghat will have a 4000 square feet amphitheater, accommodating 400-500 people. Telia Ghat will also have a basketball court, and Shakka Ghat will house an akhada for traditional wrestling.
- Security and Convenience: A police post will be established at Naya Ghat to ensure the safety of visitors. Additionally, four changing rooms and toilets will be constructed to enhance visitor convenience.
- Aesthetic Enhancements: Attractive stone canopies with elegant lighting will be installed at all ghats, providing comfortable seating areas for visitors.
The redevelopment project also prioritizes community needs and environmental sustainability:
- Marriage Hall at Shakka Ghat: Recognizing the challenges faced by locals due to expensive lawns in the city, a hall capable of hosting over 200 people will be built near Shakka Baba Temple. This hall will cater to weddings and other auspicious ceremonies.
- Greenery and Plantation: Using the Miyawaki method, 8000 plants will be planted across the ghats. These include shade-providing trees like Peepal, Banyan, and Neem, as well as ornamental flowering plants like Amaltas, Kachnar, Gulchin Champa, and more.
The ghats are being constructed using pink stones from Chunar, known for their durability and aesthetic appeal. Skilled artisans from Chunar and Rajasthan are meticulously crafting the steps of the ghats, each six inches in height. These pink stones are known for their ability to remain cool even in hot weather, ensuring comfort for visitors. The structures are designed to last over 500 years, promising a lasting legacy.
According to Harender Sikka, Director of the Piramal Group, "70% of the work has been completed. The second phase will commence after the monsoon. The new construction, along with the plantation, will not only enhance the beauty of the ghats but also contribute to environmental conservation. We aim to undertake more such projects in Kashi."
The redevelopment of the eight ghats in Onkaleshwar Khand is set to bring a new dimension to Kashi, merging its ancient heritage with contemporary amenities. This initiative promises to elevate the spiritual and cultural experience for all who visit, reaffirming Kashi's timeless allure and its adaptation to the needs of modern times.
