Advancing Agriculture in Varanasi: A Focus on Innovation and Sustainability

Varanasi, the ancient city known for its spiritual and cultural heritage, is now witnessing a significant push towards agricultural advancement under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On his first visit to his parliamentary constituency on June 18, after taking oath for his third term, PM Modi emphasized the importance of agriculture by holding a farmers' meet. This event has catalyzed a series of initiatives aimed at bolstering the agricultural sector, with particular emphasis on youth engagement and sustainable practices.

Agri Junction Centres: Empowering Youth Agrarians

The state government has taken substantial steps to empower young agrarians by setting a target to open 20 Agri Junction Centres in Varanasi for the current financial year. This initiative, introduced in 2016-17, has seen moderate success, with only 104 centres established between 2016-17 and 2023-24. Currently, 71 of these centres are operational. The renewed focus aims to significantly increase this number, providing more opportunities for agriculture graduates and experienced agrarians.

Eligibility and Application Process

According to Deputy Director of Agriculture, AK Singh, the program is open to graduates in agriculture and allied fields such as horticulture, animal husbandry, forestry, dairy, veterinary sciences, and poultry from recognized universities. Additionally, experienced diploma holders and candidates with intermediate qualifications in agriculture can apply. Selected beneficiaries will undergo a 13-day training under the Rural Business Development Scheme (RIDP). Interested candidates must submit their applications by July 15 at the Krishi Bhawan collectorate farm in Chandpur.

Conditions for Agri Junction Centres

Beneficiaries of the Agri Junction scheme are required to run a ‘One Staff Shop’ for a minimum of three years. Failure to comply will result in blacklisting from all agricultural schemes and recovery of the expenditure incurred. These centres are designed to provide a comprehensive range of services, including the sale of seeds, fertilizers, agricultural equipment, and chemicals, all under one roof. They also offer repair and maintenance services for agricultural machinery, animal feed, and the sale of agricultural and processed products. Additionally, the centres provide crucial weather updates and other relevant information to farmers.

Government Support and Initiatives

The state government's initiative aims to streamline and improve agricultural practices, ensuring that farmers have easy access to necessary resources and information. By empowering young, educated agrarians, the program also seeks to bring innovation and modern techniques to traditional farming practices. The Agri Junction Centres are poised to become hubs of agricultural activity, fostering growth and sustainability in the sector.

PM Modi’s Commitment to Farmers

PM Modi’s visit to Varanasi on June 18 was marked by a significant announcement – the release of the 17th instalment of Rs 20,000 crore under the PM-KISAN scheme, benefitting farmers across the country. He also granted certificates to over 30,000 Self Help Groups (SHGs) recognized as Krishi Sakhis, underscoring his commitment to empowering farmers and enhancing agricultural productivity.

The Future of Agriculture in Varanasi

The increased focus on agriculture in Varanasi reflects a broader strategy to ensure food security, promote sustainable farming practices, and enhance the livelihoods of farmers. With continued support from the state and central governments, Varanasi is set to become a model for agricultural innovation and sustainability. The Agri Junction Centres will play a crucial role in this transformation, providing essential services and fostering a new generation of agrarian entrepreneurs.

In conclusion, Varanasi's agricultural sector is on the brink of a significant transformation. The initiatives led by PM Modi and the state government are set to empower young agrarians, provide essential resources to farmers, and promote sustainable farming practices. As these efforts continue to unfold, Varanasi is poised to become a beacon of agricultural innovation and growth, setting an example for other regions to follow.
