Relief on the Way – 3 Bridge to be Handed Over to the Public Soon

Varanasi, known as the cultural capital of the world, continues to witness rapid infrastructural transformation. The city’s landscape has evolved significantly, and the remaining bridge projects are progressing at an accelerated pace. In a major development, three crucial bridges in Varanasi are set to be opened for public use soon. However, the construction of the Kazjakpura ROB, Kadipur ROB, and Mohansarai Six-Lane Road bridge was delayed due to the influx of pilgrims during the Maha Kumbh. The shortage of raw materials further slowed down the pace, but post-Maha Kumbh, the projects have regained momentum. The Kazjakpura ROB and Mohansarai Six-Lane Road bridge are expected to be completed by March, while the Kadipur ROB bridge is scheduled for completion by June.

Kazjakpura ROB: Final Stages of Construction

The Kazjakpura ROB is nearing completion, with only the railway section remaining under construction. At present, work is underway to establish the foundation and pour concrete for two pillars. Once completed, the bow-string girder will be installed. This two-lane ROB spans 1.356 km (1356 meters) and aims to alleviate traffic congestion in the area. A total of 55 pillars are being constructed, and the bridge will provide seamless connectivity between GT Road, Sarnath, Ring Road, Markandey Mahadev Dham, and Ghazipur.

The construction of the Kazjakpura ROB began in September 2019 and was initially slated for completion by June 2022. However, several delays caused by utility shifting, design modifications, and obtaining necessary approvals from the railway authorities have resulted in multiple extensions of the deadline. Despite these challenges, 95% of the construction work is now complete, and officials from the Setu Nigam expect the project to be fully ready by May.

Key Highlights of Kazjakpura ROB:

  • Length: 1356 meters
  • Number of pillars: 55 (stretching from Kazjakpura to Saraiya)
  • Project cost: INR 144 crore
  • Construction started: September 2019
  • Expected completion: May 2025

Kadipur ROB: 80% Work Completed, Traffic Relief on the Horizon

The construction of the Kadipur ROB is progressing steadily, with 80% of the work completed. Initially, the project was scheduled for completion by March, but the deadline has now been extended to June. The total expenditure on this ROB is estimated at INR 51.38 crore.

Once operational, the bridge will ease traffic congestion significantly, particularly for residents who frequently face roadblocks due to the railway crossing at Kadipur. The frequent closure of railway gates causes severe traffic disruptions, especially for commuters traveling between Chaubepur, Munari, Cholapur, Jaunpur, Azamgarh, Ghazipur, and Chandauli. The bridge will also benefit passengers heading to Babatpur Airport.

The construction plan includes 11 pillars on the Chaubepur side and 6 pillars on the western Babatpur side. The Setu Nigam has successfully completed 80% of the project, and work on the approach roads is currently in progress. The bridge is expected to be fully functional by August 2025.

Key Highlights of Kadipur ROB:

  • Completion status: 80% completed
  • Estimated cost: INR 59 crore
  • Number of pillars: 16 (Chaubepur and Babatpur sides)
  • Construction started: July 2021
  • Expected completion: August 2025

Mohansarai Six-Lane Road: Completion on Schedule

The Mohansarai Six-Lane Road project, which connects Prayagraj to Varanasi, has also faced significant delays due to the heavy influx of Maha Kumbh pilgrims. The construction was halted for approximately 20 days, affecting the project’s progress. However, the Public Works Department (PWD) has taken proactive measures to ensure that the project regains momentum. The department implemented route diversions to facilitate uninterrupted construction activities.

Currently, 90% of the project has been completed, with the remaining 10% expected to be finalized by March. This crucial route stretches over 10 km as a six-lane highway, with an additional 3 km as a four-lane road, covering the 13-km distance between Cantt and Mohansarai.

One of the major challenges faced during construction was the removal of encroachments and utility shifting, including transformer and pole relocations. The stretch between Maheshpur and Baulia remains an area of concern due to poor road conditions.

Key Highlights of Mohansarai Six-Lane Road:

  • Project cost: INR 396.53 crore
  • Road length: 10 km (Six-Lane), 3 km (Four-Lane)
  • Completion status: 90% completed
  • Expected completion: March 2025

Challenges Faced During Construction

The construction of these three major infrastructure projects has encountered several challenges, including:

  1. Maha Kumbh Pilgrim Influx:
    • The heavy rush of devotees disrupted construction activities, particularly in January and February.
  2. Raw Material Shortages:
    • Supply chain disruptions led to delays in obtaining construction materials.
  3. Railway Approvals:
    • Necessary clearances from railway authorities caused significant delays in the ROB projects.
  4. Encroachments & Utility Shifting:
    • Shifting of electric poles, transformers, and underground pipelines slowed the progress.

Impact of These Infrastructure Developments

The completion of these three bridges and roads will have a profound impact on Varanasi’s infrastructure and connectivity:

  1. Reduced Traffic Congestion:
    • The new ROBs will ease congestion at railway crossings, reducing delays for commuters.
  2. Improved Connectivity:
    • Faster and smoother access to key locations such as Sarnath, Babatpur Airport, and Prayagraj.
  3. Enhanced Economic Growth:
    • Better infrastructure will promote trade, tourism, and real estate development in Varanasi and nearby regions.
  4. Time-Saving for Commuters:
    • The completion of these projects will significantly reduce travel time for residents and visitors.

Final Thoughts

Varanasi is on the verge of a major infrastructural upgrade with the near completion of the Kazjakpura ROB, Kadipur ROB, and Mohansarai Six-Lane Road. While delays due to the Maha Kumbh pilgrimage and logistical challenges have extended project timelines, the renewed momentum post-festival is a promising sign. These developments will not only improve traffic conditions but also contribute to the overall economic and social progress of the city.

Residents and visitors alike eagerly await the completion of these projects, which are expected to provide significant relief from congestion and enhance Varanasi’s status as a rapidly modernizing urban center. With the completion deadlines approaching, the city is set to witness a remarkable transformation, further solidifying its reputation as a blend of tradition and modernity.
